About Shelly

Shelly (Rachel) Yechimovich (born March, 28, 1960) is a parliament member, author and Israeli politician. Before entering politics she was a reporter and a radio and television broadcaster. She is a graduate in behavioral science at Ben Gurion University (psychology, sociology and anthropology).

Her father was a construction worker and her mother was a teacher, both holocaust survivors from Poland. Yechimovich started her reporting career as a journalist for Al Hamishmar news paper in the south, later moved to report on Kol Israel radio station in the south, and then moved to senior reporting positions, covering labor, economics and politics. She broadcasted the economic weekly program "Tzeva Hakessef" at Rehet Bet. As Razi Barkai retired from Kol Israel, she was chosen by Shalom Kital to substitute for Barkai as broadcaster of the popular program "Hakol Diburim", which she presented and edited for seven years, and in which she assumed an important role in shaping its agenda. She brought feminist and social agenda to prime time radio and along with her peer Karmela Menashe, gave a stable platform for the women of "Four Mothers" movement, until the withdrawal of the I.D.F. from Lebanon.

In October 2000, Shelly left Reshet Bet and joined the news company of channel 2, where she hosted "Meet the Press", gave her own socio-economic commentary (Giluy Da`at), uncovered connections between capital and government and did not hesitate to confront the biggest capitalists. At the same time she joined Galey Tzahal and broadcasted once a week Razi Barkai's current affairs show "Ma Boer".

Throughout her career Yechimovich promoted topics she regarded important, without portraying a façade of objectivity. She often dealt with socio-economic topics from a social-democratic view point, as well as women's status affairs.

On November 29, 2005, two weeks after Amir Peretz was elected to lead the Labor Party, Yechimovich announced quitting journalism to pursue a political career as a candidate for the Labor Party list for the 17th Knesset. She was elected 9th and became a parliament member after the elections. She is a noted member in the parliament's financial committee and a member in the state inspection committee, where she supports the state inspector and the rule of law authorities in their struggle against corruption. As parliament member she leads extensive action and legislation in social and economic issues, focusing on workers rights and on contractor's workers specifically.
Shelly Yechimovich is an active legislator and has been able to introduce 17 important laws, most of which concern labor laws:

The law of protection for employees who uncover corruption - allows substantial compensation for employees who have suffered for uncovering felony or irregularities in proper management, and imposes criminal sanctions including arrest and heavy fines to executives who abused employees who uncovered corruption.

The salary protection act-pay slips - a revolutionary law that transfers the burden of proof from the employee to the employer in cases of alleged exploitation. The law turns the pay slip into a detailed and clear document and imposes harsh sanctions against employers who hide behind an ambiguous slip only to exploit workers. The legislation was made possible through more than two years of deliberation and extensive agreements with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment, Ministry of Justice, the Histadrut, the employers and the social organizations.

The National Health Insurance Law returning citizens - Up to this point a returning citizen was not granted health insurance upon arrival, thus resulting in lack of coverage in case of illness, whether a flew or cancer. This law corrected this flaw.

The Lobbyists Law - balancing the strength of the rich who are represented by lobbyists in the parliament and the wide public, through manifestation of the lobbyists' details and their clients, and wearing a special badge.

The Elongation of Maternity Leave Law - for the first time in fifty years maternity leave has been elongated by two weeks to a period of fourteen weeks.

The right to work while being seated law - every employer must provide the employees with chairs to be used during work, including substantial financial sanctions against an employer who violates the law and compensation for the employee.

The comedian Tal Freedman played a semi fictional character inspired by Shelly called "Chelly" in the satire "Eretz Nehederet".

Yechimovich has written two best seller novles: "Eshet Ish" (Keshet, 2001) and "Mishakey Zuggot" (Keshet, 2003). She lives in South Tel Aviv and has two children: gal (17) and Rama (12).
